The term “Orang Ulu” brings the meaning of “people who live upriver” to describe the several tribes that live in Sarawak’s upriver area. The “Orang Ulu” consists of the Kayan and Kenyah tribes, aas well as the smaller neighbouring tribes of the Kajang, Kejaman, Punan, Ukit, and Penan. Now, the term “Orang Ulu” also includes the tribes who live down-river, Lun Bawang, Lun Dayeh. It also include Berawan, Saban who live far-upstream, as well as the plateau-dwelling Kelabits.
Orang Ulu makes up around 5.5% of Sarawak’s population. The Orang Ulu are considered artistic as their longhouses are decorated with murals and woodcarvings. They known for their beautiful beads handicraft and their meaningful tattoos.
